The aim of this contribution is to point out some analogous features between moral ideals of T. G. Masaryk and M. Buber, related to their concepts of nation and its role in the world, and connected to idea of humanity. Both philosophers were confronted with the nationalistic movements and birth of new states. Masaryk’s ideals of humanism included freedom, democracy and social ethics. The idea of humanity, adopted by Masaryk from Ján Kollár, has become his solution of the “Czech question”: Masaryk believed that each nation had a mission given by the Providence, and the meaning of the Czech nation (into which he included the Slovaks as a related branch of the Slav tribe) was to develop the ideals of humanity. Masaryk’s concept of the Czech nation, including its identity based on the traditions of the Czech reformation, caused problems difficult to solve. Apart from that, his ethics was derived from the example of Jesus’ rules of conduct. Marin Buber’s ethics of Hebrew humanism is also related to the Bible, on the idea of imitation of God in mercifulness and compassion. Buber’s Cultural Zionism is based on analogous idea of national and moral renewal based on national religion, which would enable the nation to fulfil its mission for the whole human kind. Both philosophers highlight the life sub specie aeternitatis, while seeking for the individual answer here and now.
