Existing theories about sociological texts claim that sociologists, when authoring a publication, face a dilemma of choosing to write in either more literary or more scientific style. This paper takes the occasion to support these theories with empirical evidence by attempting to detect distinct types of sociological papers based on their textual and extratextual characteristics. The goal is pursued by including a corpus of literary short fiction documents into the dataset of research papers published in the journal Czech Sociological Review and reducing the number of features for clustering algorithm. Resulting misclassifications are used to separate the sociological corpus into two groups based on the confusion or the lack of thereof with short fiction documents. The groups are further analysed in terms of their distinct distributions of the sex of the first authors and citation counts. The observed hierarchies are consistent with theoretical expectation about the intertwining of rhetorical choices and social attributes of sociological publications.
