For the most part of the Neolithic and Eneolithic in Central Europe, one of the main archaeological evidence are settlement areas. The preservation of the original surface from this period is very rare, therefore the main source of past activities is comprised of sunken features. Researchers are still arguing about the interpretation of settlement refuse coming from these features. According to some of them, the settlement refuse is a direct source of past activities. However, another group of researchers question this view. Some researchers argue for the cosmological context of depositing the refuse, other ones differentiate the nature of waste disposal based on particular items. Furthermore, deposition of settlement refuse depends on various transformations (in the sense of M. B. Schiffer and E. Neustupný). Therefore, the goal of this session is to discuss the aboveraised arguments with leading specialists on settlement archaeology, theory and methodology as well as sedimentology. The discussion focuses on the possibilities and potential of settlement refuse as a source of past activities, its interpretation, limitation, reliability of archaeological chronology as well as current research trends not only in archaeology.
