Optically levitated nanoparticles have recently gained increasing attention as an attractive experimental platform suitable for testing fundamental ideas of quantum physics and statisticalmechanics, as well as for implementing highly sensitive detection schemes for characterizing static and dynamic interaction forces and potentials on the nanometer spatial scale. However, despite these unprecedentedly high sensitivities, the practical performance of force sensors based on optically levitated nanoparticles is still markedly limited by uncertainties in the particle displacement calibration, whose accuracy is critically affected by the poor knowledge on the particle’s mass and size. Holographic video microscopy has emerged as a promising experimental technique for high-resolution, three-dimensional (3D) tracking of position of individual colloidal particles and for quantitative characterization of the particle size, morphology, and refractive index. In our research project, we developed a theoretical model capable of predicting features in the digital holograms that arise from the finite aperture of the light-collecting lens.
