Kniha popisuje úzce definované folklorní téma, postavu vodníka; popisuje způsoby její existence v původní folklorní orální tradici (včetně oblasti předfolkloristické) a zejména její vstup do moderní literatury, její vývoj a modifikace v ní, a studuje její genologický a narativní potenciál. Princip přechodu folklorního jevu do vrstvy umělecké je zobecněn a na konci knihy je učiněn pokus o jeho typologizaci. Kniha sestává ze dvou částí. První, kap. 1–4, je míněna jako příprava materiálu. Po exkurzi do oblasti, která slouží jako zdroj folkloru, tj. mytologie a náboženství, je tematizován vodník ve folkloru: kap. 2 a 4 ukazují specifika vodníkovy postavy ve folkloru, její jedinečnou pozici v kontextu mytologického bestiáře. Druhá část je věnována moderní literatuře. Kap. 5 podává výběrový překlad vodnického tématu v moderní české fikci. Kap. 6–8 sumarizuje působení folklorního tématu v umělecké literatuře, kap. 7 navazuje na kapitoly o jedinečnosti vodníkovy pozice ve folkloru a definuje jeho specifičnost jakožto mytologické figury adoptované uměleckou literaturou.

The book examines a narrowly defined folklore topic – the character of waterman – and it describes the ways it works in the original folk oral tradition (including an excursion into the area of pre-folkloric), and, particularly, the ways it enters into modern literature, is developed and modified there, studying the genological and narrative potential of the character. The principle of the transfer of a folklore phenomenon into artistic discourse is generalized at the end of the book, and an attempt at its typologization is made. The book consists of two parts. The first part, chapters 1–4, are meant as a preparation of the material. After an excursion into the area which serves as the source of folklore, i.e. the area of mythology and religion, waterman in folklore is discussed, the evidence of the waterman theme is shown, and the scope of folkloric genres in which waterman figures is demonstrated. Chapters 2 and 4 point out the specifics of the character of waterman in folklore, its unique position in the context of mythological creatures. In the second part, modern literature is discussed. Chapter 5 offers a selective overview of the waterman theme in modern Czech fiction. Chapters 6–8 sum up the working of the theme in the artistic literary discourse. Chapter 7 follows up on the chapters on the uniqueness of waterman’s position in folklore and defines his specificity as a mythological figure adopted by literature.
