The main production of estrogens in males is within the testes, where estrogens play role in control of spermatogenesis. Generally, estrogen action is mediated via binding and activation of estrogen receptors (ERs). Nowadays, two types of classical ERs (ERa,ERb) and several splice variants are known. These variants may directly mediate estrogen signalling, or they may modulate the function of full-length ERs. We focused our study on expression of ERb as a predominant variant of ERs in testes. According to our results, at least two variants of ERs mRNA are present in testes and spermatozoa. Further, we prepared specific monoclonal antibodies against these variants. More studies are needed to determine whether these variants are present within a single cell and can thus interact, or whether one type of cells preferentially express one ERb variant while another cell type express the second variant.
