Volatile species generation of transition metals accomplished by the reaction of the acidic sample with tetrahydroborate opens a novel route for analyte introduction into atomic spectrometric detectors. Recently, we studied the generation of analytically useful gold volatile species. The on-line atomization in the quartz multiatomizer for atomic absorption detection was employed. Radiometric and spectrometric measurements were used to determine the generation efficiency of 12 % at the Ar carrier flow rate of 240 ml min-1 optimized to reach maximum sensitivity with the employed atomizer. At the Ar carrier flow rate of 600 ml min-1, efficiency was twice as high but sensitivity, and consequently also detection limit, was impaired. The achieved detection limit is controlled by the inherent atomizer sensitivity and by the slow release of analyte from the reaction mixture.
