The maturity of embryos in the gynoparae and their flight activity depend on the time remaining for their offspring to mature. This has a major affect on the autumnal dynamics of host alternating aphids. For the gynoparae of those species that have only one primary host plant, which in autumn is only available for a short period of time for the development of oviparous larvae, there are advantages in quickly finding their primary host and producing offspring.
