The origin and degradation of copper pigments from Bohemian Gothic murals were evaluated both on base of the complex investigation of real micro-samples by micro-analytical techniques and on base of model corrosion experiments. The efficiency of the powder X-ray micro-diffraction (micro-XRD) for direct identification of crystal phases with similar chemical composition, present in micro-samples of multicomponent colour layers, was demonstrated and the first time a new type of copper pigment – cumengeite, Pb21Cu20Cl42(OH)40 – was identified by means of micro-XRD.
