The major mechanism of antiviral action of acyclic nucleoside phosphonates is inhibition of virus-induced DNA polymerases and of reverse transcriptases. They inhibit eukaryotic DNA polymerases, as well. Their suppressive effects on proliferation of mammalian lymphocytes differ greatly in dependence on the chemical structure. No tight correlation between the cytostatic and antiviral effects has been observed.
