Xanthine oxidoreductase/xanthine oxidase were detected in the epithelium and endothelium of human cornea (normal post-mortem eyes). It was suggested that under various pathological conditions, xanthine oxidase, an enzyme generated reactive oxygen species might be involved in oxidative eye injury.
