The effect of compression on Lactobacillus acidophilus was discussed. Their process includes the growth of bacteria, formulation, freeze drying, and compression to "encapsulate" cells. Cell viability remains above 90% with compression pressures of 60 MPa, though decreases strongly after application of 90 MPa. Cell viability has been lower for thicker coatings due to a higher resistance to rehydration. Overall, the total release time has varied from 5 to 9 hours, implying that this system could avoid cell release in the stomach and small intestines. Therefore, targeted cell delivery to the low intestines seems possible.
