In this chapter we review encapsulation of living cells into inorganic polymers focusing on cells – their physiological state during and after immobilization procedure. The discussion of experimental methodologies of monitoring of physiology of immobilized cells is based on our research that have been done since 1995. Immobilization techniques, matrix compositions, and microorganism strains are listed and commented. State of the art of determination of immobilized cell proliferation, fate of cells appendages, and cell communication are shown. Detrimental effect of alcohols, developed during encapsulation into prepolymerized alkoxysilanes on cell viability is compared with other influences affined to inorganic polymers. At the end we adumbrate perspectives of living bio/inorganic composites and challenges for scientists in this frontier field of inorganic chemistry, biology, material science, and nanotechnology.
