Two different welds of polymer materials are simulated in order to study the influence of the change of material properties on the value of the stress intensity factor. The finite element method and model of functionally graded material are used for estimation of the fracture parameters of the weld. Simulations are performed on a single edge cracked tension specimen geometry where Young’s modulus change is prescribed. In order to simulate the continuous change of material behaviour through the structure, the numerical model is composed of a set of strips with constant Young’s modulus. For verification of the proposed numerical model for some special cases, the numerical results were compared with the analytical solution and X-FEM simulation and good agreement was found. The paper presented shows an effective method for simulation of material change using a model of functionally graded material.
