A new species of Osteocephalus, O. castaneicola sp. nov., was described from lowland Amazonia, northern Bolivia. The new species differs from other species of the genus genetically and in several morphological characters. It inhabits terra firme rainforest, breeds in water-filled fruit capsules of the Brazil nut tree and has oophagous tadpoles. Estimation of phylogenetic relationships within Osteocephalus based on mitochondrial DNA sequences showed that the new species is closely related to O. planiceps and O. deridens.
