It is not possible to register successful original philological work with scientific goals. The medieval way of working in science prevailed, and gifted individuals from a number of professors and their students went abroad. Publishing and translation activities were small. Greek writings and their authors were recognized by intellectuals in the time of humanism mostly indirectly, from the writings of their Latin imitators and translators, or through German language. In 1583, for example, a not very successful translation of Sophocles’ Antigone was published by Petr Codicill, the then rector of the university, and by 1800 we have only a few other short non-original translations included in other works, which we will deal with in more detail. Even at the beginning of the 19th century, despite the influence of neo-humanism and the Sturm und Drang movement, among the first attempts to translate excerpts from ancient tragedies from the Greek original, a complete translation of Seneca’s tragedies was surprisingly created, despite contemporary stereotypes.
