Autor nejprve charakterizuje tento typ pramene a konstatuje, že jeho výpovědní hodnota je devalvována tím, že dopisy se nedochovaly a byly reprodukovány jen ve vybraných ukázkách, většinou pak o nich referovaly – s různou mírou spolehlivosti – přehledové zprávy za určité období. V celém čtyřicetiletém období autor z hlediska tématu rozlišuje a přibližuje čtyři etapy. Od února 1948 zhruba do poloviny padesátých let převládala v rozhlasovém vysílání propagandistická rétorika a v jejím duchu se většinou nesly i zaznamenané posluchačské dopisy, přestože nechyběly ani velmi kritické reakce. Poté lze do druhé poloviny šedesátých let sledovat liberalizační tendence, pestřejší programovou nabídku a otevírání společensky naléhavých témat, na což reagovaly i došlé dopisy. V krátkém, ale výjimečném období pražského jara 1968 i prvních dnech po srpnové okupaci sehrál rozhlas spolu s dalšími médii prvořadou roli a těšil se velké podpoře posluchačů, kteří poté do začátku sedmdesátých let s klesající intenzitou dávali ve svých ohlasech najevo nesouhlas s potlačováním reforem i státní suverenity. V období normalizace až do listopadu 1989 se rozhlas obratnějším způsobem vrátil k dřívější úloze „hlásné trouby” režimu a zdá se, že velká část společnosti přestala vidět smysl v komunikaci s ním anebo ho přímo ignorovala. Tehdejší interní analýzy posluchačských dopisů jsou ovšem velmi formální a téměř přehlížejí kritické hlasy, a to i v tak vypjatých momentech, jako byly masové politické protesty na konci osmdesátých let. V závěrečném hodnocení autor shrnuje, že dopisy posluchačů rozhlasu z dochovaných materiálů neposkytují celistvý obraz o názorech veřejnosti v minulém režimu, ale spíše zaostřený pohled na určitá témata. V dlouhodobé perspektivě ovšem tyto ohlasy měnící se nálady ve společnosti ilustrují, i když někdy jen nepřímo a zašifrovaně. In the short but exceptional period of the Prague Spring of 1968 and the first days after the Soviet occupation, radio, together with other media, played a primary role and enjoyed great support from listeners, who then expressed their opposition to the suppression of reforms and state sovereignty until the early 1970s, although with decreasing intensity. In the normalization period until November 1989, radio returned to its former role as the “mouthpiece” of the regime, and it seems that a large part of society ceased to see the point of responding to it and simply ignored it. The internal analyses of the listeners' letters at this time are very formal and almost ignore critical voices, even in such tense moments as the mass political protests of the late 1980s. In his final assessment, the author concludes that the listeners' letters in the form in which they survived do not provide a complete picture of public opinion in the previous regime, but rather a focused view of certain topics. In the long term, however, the letters do illustrate the changing mood of society, although rather indirectly and in cryptic terms.
