The catalysts were characterized by elemental analysis MP-AES, nitrogen physisorption, FTIR, DR UV–vis spectroscopy, ESR, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. In the oxidation of ethanol, the supported MoV (Pd/ MoV) catalysts were as active as common transition metal oxide catalysts (at space velocity 20 l g-1 h-1, the T50 temperature varied in the range from 126 to 179 C). The Pd-modified Mo (MoV) catalysts showed slightly higher activity than the nonmodified ones, but substantially improved selectivity towards the formation of undesirable reaction byproducts: formation of CH3CHO was decreased and CO was not formed at all. Thus, Pd/HPA/SiO2 materials, with their optimum acidity and high oxidation/reduction abilityare promising catalysts for the deep oxidation of alcohols.
