Its aim was to shift from a perspective in which Jews are objects of communist policies to one which explores Jewish subjectivity and creativity in communist Europe after World War II and the Holocaust.
Moreover, the conference examined Jewish history from a transnational vantage point, in other words, moving across the so-called Iron Curtain. This challenges a dominant historiographic paradigm by questioning the Soviet-centric perspective regnant in most work on the subject and shows the wide variety of Jewish experiences in both law and culture among communist states and even within single countries.
