AnotaceThe International Geoscience Program No. 580 (2009-2013, O.E.T. 2014) focused on the application of magnetic susceptibility (MS) as a paleoclimatic proxy on Paleozoic sedimentary rocks and on the characterization of the magnetic susceptibility signal. Here we provide a summary of the scientific targets behind the project and a summary of the organized activities. This project concerns three main issues: (1) compiling the available MS data from the different researchers and continuing the collection of new data; (2) identification of the nature and origin of the magnetic minerals carrying MS signal; (3) technical applications for high-resolution stratigraphic correlation and use as a tool for cyclostratigraphic and paleoclimatic reconstruction purposes. As the project was supported by UNESCO and IUGS, the aspects of education together with spread of innovative and relatively cheap methods worldwide were also emphasized in the context of present-day social, cultural and environmental challenges.
