AnotaceThe main aim of the GEOMON network, encompassing 14 small forest catchments in the Czech Republic (Fottova, 2003), is long-term collection of comparable biogeochemical data, which enables the identification of environmental trends. Data on deposition fluxes (bulk and throughfall) and outputs via surface runoff are available since 1994. Desulfurization program that was completed in 1999 caused the most significant decrease of S deposition, but it still remains relatively high, especially near the Polish industrial area (Orlické hory Mts.) where, particularly in 1998 before desulfurization of the power plant Chvaletice, an extreme of 91 kg S ha-1 y-1 in throughfall occurred. Afterwards, N started to be the main acidification factor. Possible explanations include: longer storage of aerosol due to recently longer dry periods connected with changing frequency or distribution of precipitation or higher application of sludge. One of the main sources is expansion of traffic in the Czech Republic. This is illustrated in Fig.1, which compares an area affected by traffic (LES near Prague) and remote area (CER in Beskydy Mts.). Over the last five years, GEOMON network was supported by a project focusing on climate change and adaptation measures. Using data from small catchments, hydrological and geochemical modeling, and critical and target loads exceedances were completed. Maps of ecostabilization measures for four catchments were used for preparation of part of territorial plan in Vimperk (southern Bohemia). An early warning system for flash floods was developed taking into account intensive precipitation, but also the potential formation of gravitationally destabilized outflow from the soil profile. This system is tested also in selected mountainous catchments of the GEOMON network.
