Increased proliferation and decreased apoptosis were found in MS and R2 at embryonic day (ED) 12.5 and 13.5 in Spry2-/- embryos. Apoptosis was also decreased in both rudiments in Spry4-/- embryos, but the proliferation was lower (similar to WTmice), and supernumerary tooth development was accelerated, exhibiting a cap stage by ED13.5. Majority of the supernumerary tooth primordia degenerated prenatally, resulting in a low percentage of supernumerary teeth in adults.
