High fluence implantation of metal ions can be used to fabricate metal-doped polymer films, which are applicable in electronics due to their high electric conductivity and field electron emission capacity. Specimens of polyimide (PI), polyetheretherketone (PEEK), and polyethyleneterephtalate (PET) were implanted by 80 keV Co+ ions at room temperature at fluences (0.2x1016 – 1.0x1017) cm–2 and annealed at temperatures below and close to Tg up to 300°C. Changes in the chemical composition and implanted depth profiles in polymers induced by high fluence metal ions irradiation and additional annealing have been studied using RBS and ERDA techniques. Structural changes of the polymers were characterised by the UV–vis spectroscopy. A significant hydrogen release from the polymer surface layer was observed along with significant changes in the surface layer composition. The UV–vis results indicated an increase in the concentration and conjugation of double bonds. Surface morphology was analysed by AFM. The changes in the polymer sheet resistance of the implanted and annealed samples were measured by standard two-point technique.
