Revisions of the phenotypic diversity of this group in the eighties of the last century as well as numerous later studies have shown its polyphyly and the need for separation of some species into different groups. The central taxon of this group – genus Pipistrellus or the tribus Pipistrellus sensu stricto – remains, however, insufficiently analyzed, in terms of species composition and phylogenetic relationships. Genus Pipistrellus sensu stricto in today's concept contains about 30 species occuring in the Old World. Molecular studies suggest that it also contains Nyctalus, a species which is, however, clearly phenotypically distinct. The aim of our study is to perform a revision of the group. For this purpose we examined five mitochondrial (cytochrome b, tRNA-Thr, 12S, tRNA-Val, 16S) and two nuclear genes (RAG1, RAG 2) of several species of Pipistrellus-like bats and related taxa obtained from museum collections. In some cases we only increased the number of genes sequenced, but in others the results represent the first molecular information obtained for the respective species. The results presented here are only preliminary, final phylogenetic hypothesis will be performed after examination of all material available.
