The main attention was focused on cheap and easy to get magnetic adsorbents which could be applied for large-scale processes. Among them magnetically modified plant-based materials (sawdust) and microbial cells (yeast and algae) were taken into consideration. The structural, adsorption and magnetic properties of the developed materials were studied in detail by means of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, spectrophotometric measurements, ESR spectroscopy and conventional magnetic methods (DC magnetization and AC susceptibility measurements). The prepared materials efficiently adsorbed selected biologically active compounds and xenobiotics.
