This paper argues that if we free ourselves from this received wisdom, we might be able to better understand not only how language works in communication, but also how it might have come into being. The alternative conception of language put forward in this article is that of inferentialism: linguistic communication is not seen in terms of encoding/decoding, but rather in terms of making moves within a space that is opened up by the rules of our language, providing for certain brand new kind of human actions: meaningful pronouncements.
