Therefore representative samples of species of altogether 81 genera from 26 families have been investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Six basic types of molar surface are differentiated. The respective types of molae differ in the cuticular structures of individual ridges. Relationships between molar type, feeding categories, and phylogenetic position of individual taxa are discussed. The functional significance of various microstructures on the molar surfaces is explained.
