However, depending on plasma parameters and RMP spectrum and amplitude, the actual RMP field may be very different. The present paper describes physics of penetration of RMP into the toroidally rotating plasma. The cylindrical reduced MHD modelling for specific RMP coils in ITER and DIII-D demonstrated that central islands are expected to be shielded due to the stronger rotation and lower resistivity compared to edge plasma which is expected to be ergodised for both machines. Non-resonant harmonics are not screened by plasma rotation, hence they could play an important role in neoclassical toroidal viscosity (NTV) braking mechanism. Latest RMP coil designs for ITER are analysed with respect to the minimisation of non-resonant NTV braking effect and the optimisation of the design.
