ARES is located at a thermal neutron guide with a characterictic wavelength of 0.1 nm. It will at first be equipped with a double focusing Si(3 1 1) monochromator with a fixed vertical and a variable horizontal bending (Wagner et al., Nucl. Instr. and Meth. A 338 (1993) 53). Samples up to 200 kg can be positioned. A 3 He area detector will be used that was developed at GeNF. It has an active area of 300 x 300 mm2 and a resolution of about 2 mm. ARES will be put into operation in summer 1999. It will be used in the frame of the GKSS R and D program and will also be open for the national and international user community. Proposals can be sent to GeNF at any time. Travel support is available for national users.
