The highest Hg contents were observed in subsurface soil horizons (up to 10 ug/g) and in mineral horizons of soil profile located downhill the mining works (up to 9 ug/g). In comparison with the waste material, where more than 80% of Hg occurred as HgS, the soils contained predominantly Hg adsorbed to mineral components (up to 79%).
