Possible mechanisms of plasma- solid interactions were studied with regard to the polarity of applied voltage and chemical composition of an aqueous solution. Electrical discharge depended in addition to the permittivity and porous properties of the ceramic also on the surface charge formed on the ceramic material, which was determined by polarity of applied voltage, pH and chemical composition of aqueous solution. Using monopolar pulses surface charge on the ceramic caused a formation of electrical double layer on the composite electrode. This layer was further polarized under external high electric field and eventually led to the quenching of electrical discharge in water. Applying of bipolar pulses these effects were eliminated.
