For the first time, we have described the detailed mechanism of the formation of pH-sensitive nanoparticles with varying pH using dynamic information from NMR, charge properties from zeta-potential, aggregation behavior from light scattering, and particle imaging using cryo-TEM. We have shown that, at basic conditions, a polymer-surfactant complex with pearl-necklace structure exists. At lower pH, globulized complexes occur due to coil-to-globule transition of a polyanion. With a further decrease of pH, the globulized complexes assemble into larger nanoparticles that are stabilized by streric repulsion of hydrophilic PEO chains of the surfactant.
