The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness and mechanisms of adsorption of three peptides with molecular weights (MWs) of 2, 4 and 6 kDa produced by cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa. The study showed that adsorption of peptides onto activated carbon increases with decreasing pH value. The highest adsorption capacity was reached at pH 5 for Picabiol 12x40 due to a high portion of mesopores in its structure and the electrostatic attraction between functionalities of the carbon and the peptides. It was demonstrated that the increase in ionic strength can enhance the adsorption of peptides by screening of the repulsive forces or by strengthening of the attractive ones, depending on the type of carbon used and pH applied. Formation of H-bonds and electrostatic interactions played an essential role in the adsorption of peptides onto activated carbon. The effectiveness of peptide adsorption increased with a decrease in MWs of peptides.
