In this short summary we discuss our recently published data about the newly emerging role of autocrine and paracrine cytokine signaling pathways in development of senescent phenotype in perspective of other data reported. DNA damage response activated by chronic subtoxic stresses leads to expression of cytokine encoding genes either primarily due to DNA damage activated kinases and/or secondarily through autocrine and paracrine effects of secreted cytokines, which activate network of cytokine-driven signaling pathways such as JAK/STAT. Changed gene expression pattern of senescent cells includes several tumor suppressors such as interferons, PML, STAT and IRF1. Intriguingly, persistent exposition of cells to conditioned media of chemotherapy-induced senescent cells is able to evoke premature senescence in neighbouring 'bystanding' cells.
