Serologic studies were conducted to determine whether sera from rodents (n = 98) had antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi s.l., the causative agent of Lyme borreliosis. Indirect haemagglutination (IRA) and indirect fluorescence assays (IFA) were used in the survey. The percentage of reactors was 10.2% in the yellow-necked mouse (Apodemus flavicollis, n = 59), and 12.8% in the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus, n = 39) in IHA (titres ranged from 1 : 40 to 1 : 640) and 8.5% in the yellow-necked mouse and 10.3% in the bank vole in IFA (titres ranged from 1 : 64 to 1 : 128). Ticks and fleas were collected from 113 rodents (64 A. flavicollis and 49 C. glareolus), and examined by dark field microscopy for borreliae. The presence of borreliae was established in 6.3% tick of all stages of Ixodes ricinus collected from A. flavicollis, and in 8.8% ticks from C. glareolus. Dermacentor reticulatus did not harbour any spirochaetes, but borreliae were seen in a larval of Haemaphysalis concinna taken from C. glareolus. Borreliae were also detected in 7.6% of fleas (Ctenophthalmus agyrtes and Histrichopsylla talpae).
