This review is focused on the so-called DC-electrochemiluminescence (or ECL with coreactant), its fundamentals and use in basic research in organic and coordination chemistry, photo(electro)chemistry and photophysics, where ECL is not still fully explored. This review is also meant to remind the fellow scientists to the substantial contribution of Prof. Fritz Pragst to this field. An appropriate attention is given to the following two types of research problems where ECL plays a crucial role: (1) selective generation of triplet states enabling investigation of their reactions and estimation of their energies; (2) Use of DC-ECL for mechanistic studies in organic electrochemistry, for interception of short-living intermediates and for visualization of electrode processes.
