Článek se věnuje specifickému kulturnímu pozadí a dějinám poznání onemocnění kuru. Tato smrtelná nemoc se až do nedávna vyskytovala u populace Fore v okrsku Východní vysočina ve vnitrozemí ostrova Nová Guinea. Za výzkum nemoci kuru byla udělena Nobelova cena americkému lékaři Danielu Gajduskovi. Přitom však byla zcela opomenuta role antropologů, kteří několik let zkoumali kulturní i biologické pozadí choroby a nakonec přesvědčivě doložili i způsob přenosu nemoci kuru. Kromě toho článek ukazuje, že nemoci a jejich pojetí mohou být silně kulturně specifické, čímž tvoří součást skupinové identity. Ta nemusí být vědomá, ale je naopak dobře čitelná zvnějšku.

The article deals with the specific cultural background and history of knowledge of the kuru disease. Until recently, the deadly disease occurred in the Fore population of the Eastern Highlands in the interior of New Guinea. The Nobel Prize was awarded to the American physician Daniel Gajdusk for his research into the kuru disease. However, the role of anthropologists was completely neglected, who for several years studied the cultural and biological background of the disease and finally convincingly documented the method of the kuru disease transmission. Besides article shows that the diseases and their concepts may be strongly culturally specific, which forms part of the group identity. It does not have to be conscious, but on the contrary it is easy to read from the outside.
