AnotaceFour years after the Second World War, the first film with the Holocaust topic was released. Distant Journey made by Jewish director Alfred Radok did not meet the ideological requirements of the new regime, and after a short screening period, it was withdrawn from the cinemas. To this day, Distant Journey remains the most complex feature film about the Holocaust of Czechoslovak Jews and a source for younger filmmakers. 1950s were characterized by Stalinist oppression and antisemitic censorship. No film was made during these years. As a result of comprehensive political, social and cultural changes at the end of the 1950s, Czechoslovak cinema entered the sixties, being important part of the New Wave. 1960s were extremely prolific in Czechoslovak cinematography, over ten films with the topic of Jews and the Holocaust were made. Feature films such as Transport from Paradise, The Shop on Main Street, ...and the Fifth Horseman is Fear, Diamonds of the Night or The Cremator are high quality motion pictures that became part of the Czechoslovak cinema canon. Keynote will focus on the evolution of depiction of Jews, Jewishness, Holocaust, and other significant motifs in the films and their literary pretexts.
