Extracts and exudates of cyanobacteria inhibit gap-junctional intercellular communication in rat liver cells in vitro. Inhibitory effects on GJIC were caused by chemicals different from microcystin and cylindrospermopsin, which indicates an existence of novel tumor promoting cyanotoxins. The effects were induced by common bloom-forming cyanobacteria (Anabaena, Aphanizomenon, Microcystis, Planktothrix), but the inhibitory potencies of extrats and exudates were species- and strain-specific.
