The paper looks at soil water movement during extreme rainfall events in the Doupě and Kout catchments (Šumava Mts.) as well as the Modrý Důl catchment (Krkonoše Mts.). Two cyclones, which moved from Hungary to Poland, caused extreme rainfall and subsequent extreme runoff in August, 2002. Precipitation, air and soil temperature, and tensiometric pressure were recorded in each catchment. Analysis has shown that the immense amount of rainfall in August 2002 exceeded the retention capacity of the catchments covered by mature spruce forest and dwarf pine forest (Modrý Důl), dead forest and herb undergrowth (Kout), and a clearing covered by herbs (Doupě). This indicates that plant cover played a negligible role in runoff formation. The soil cover in the mountains, formed of Eutric Cambisols (Kout and Doupě) as well as Humic Podzols and Lithic Leptosols (Modrý Důl), was not able to prevent catastrophic runoff conditions because its retention capacity is rather low (60–90 mm).
