The article deals with the explanatory notes and their sources in 1 Samuel in the oldest Czech translation of the Bible (around 1350). Using the example of the explanatory note repeatedly accompanying the translation of the expression ‘spiritus domini malus’ in chapters 16-19, it is demonstrated that one of the reasons for the repeated use may be the assumed auditory perception of the text.
