The most significant differences were identified during summer months. While Tmin and Trange are more variable throughout the year, Tmax, Tmean, VPDmax and VPDmin are more variable during growing season only. The analysis of microclimatic parameters along successional gradients show that the microclimate of managed stands differs from that of old-growth forests in early successional stages, up to a QMD values of approximately 21 cm and height of 22 m. Microclimate parameters of managed stands exceeded the range of old-growth mainly due to the values of clearings and young stands, which indicate that microclimate of these human-induced developmental phases differs from natural microclimate conditions in old-growth stands. It is important to emphasise, that this difference is very clear despite the fact that we also included early successional phases of old-growth forests, i.e., stand gaps. These gaps were more buffered compared to clearings or young stands of managed stands, yet they were less thermally buffered compared to the growing and optimum phase. Clearings and young stands of managed forests had significantly higher Tmax and lower Tmin and consequently also higher Trange, compared to gaps of old-growth forests. Vapour pressure deficit - a physiologically important measure for plants - was much higher in clearings and young stands compared to mature managed or old-growth forests, a finding that particularly applied to VPDmax.
