As the planetary polycrisis becomes truly urgent, the idea of the rights of nature is slowly moving from the positions of green campaigners or judicial activism to serious consideration and legal analysis. Rights of nature are seen as a promising solution to the situation where the traditional European and national nature conservation laws are insufficiently effective. The paper first mapped out the numerous challenges and conflict areas where the concept of rights of nature inevitably encounters in the European legal environment, such as legal personality, legal representation and standing. In its main part, the paper reflected on how to approach the concept more realistically in terms of feasibility, and at the same time more creatively, especially in the context of the diminishing time we have to address the biodiversity crisis.
