Kniha je úvodem do filosofie René Descarta (1595–1650) a jeho koncepce vědy. Zabývá se nejdůležitějšími tématy Descartova díla: teoretickou filosofií, naukou o duši, etikou a filosofií přírody. Ve svém zaměření především na teoretickou filosofií kniha probírá Descartovy klíčové argumenty nejen z Discours de la méthode (Rozpravy o metodě) a Meditationes de prima philosophia (Meditací o první filosofii), ale také z raného a nikdy nedokončeném textu Regulae ad directionem ingenii (Pravidla pro vedení rozumu), a to zvláště vzhledem k tomu, že Regulae předkládají Descartovy myšlenky týkající se vědy a myšlení jasněji než pozdější díla. Elementy Descartovy teoretické filosofie, jimiž se zabývají první dvě kapitoly jsou: Descartův koncept vědy a myšlení („mathesis universalis“), metoda pochybnosti, Cogito-argument, nauka o substanci a důkazy Boží existence. Následující (třetí) kapitola se zabývá Descartovou naukou o duši a zaměřuje se především na výklad v jeho knize Passions de l’Âme (Vášně duše) a v jeho korespondenci s Alžbětou Falckou týkající se tématu commercia, tj. jednoty těla a duše v lidských bytostech. Kapitola o Descartově etice ukazuje, že to, o co mu v etice šlo, je spíše zajištění vlastní filosofické životní dráhy než vypracování teorie intersubjektivních norem. Poslední kapitola věnovaná Descartově filosofii přírody předkládá výběr z jeho nejvlivnějších myšlenek týkajících se fyziky a astronomie vypracovaných v jeho Principia philosophiae (Principech filosofie). Poznámky nabízejí důležitou sekundární literaturu k dalšímu studiu. Kniha nechce čtenáře jen uvádět do Descartových nauk, ale také do jeho způsobu myšlení a do vědeckých záměrů, které vedly jeho filosofický vývoj. Opírá se o mnohaletou výuku a bádání (z něhož bylo něco již publikováno).

The book is an introduction to René Descartes’ (1595-1650) philosophy and his conception of science. It deals with the most important topics of Descartes’ œuvre: theoretical philosophy, theory of the soul, ethics and philosophy of nature. Since the main focus is on theoretical philosophy, it discusses Descartes’ key arguments not only in Discours de la méthode (Discourse on Method) and Meditationes de Prima Philosophia (Meditations on First Philosophy), but also in the early and never completed text Regulae ad directionem ingenii (Rules for the Direction of the Mind), especially since the Regulae show Descartes’ ideas on science and reasoning more clearly than his later works. The elements of Descartes’ theoretical philosophy dealt with in the first two chapters are: Descartes’ concept of science and reasoning (“mathesis universalis”), the method of doubt, the Cogito-argument, the theory of substance and the proofs of the existence of God. The following [3rd] chapter considers Descartes’ theory of the soul and focuses largely on the account in his book Passions de l’Âme (The Passions of the Soul) and his correspondence with Princess Elizabeth of Bohemia on the topic of commercium, i.e. the unity of body and soul in human beings. The chapter on Descartes’ ethics argues that his concern in ethics is to safeguard his philosophical way of life rather than to establish a theory of intersubjective norms. The final chapter, on Descartes’ philosophy of nature, presents a selection of his most influential ideas on physics and astronomy, as developed in his Principia Philosophiae (Principles of Philosophy). The footnotes offer important secondary literature for further reading. This book seeks not only to introduce the reader to Descartes’ doctrines but also to his way of thinking and to the scientific goals which guided his development in philosophy. It draws on the author’s many years of teaching and research (some of it previously published).
