The paper introduces research of banners and slogans at protests as a specific type of written folklore. The introduction is focused on opportunities which this type of material offers to folkloristic research. The main part introduces one of the themes – collective memory. It is based on a field research and a documentation of banners at the anti-government protests in the Czech Republic in 2019 (Za nezávislou justici / For an Independent Judiciary).
The authors of these banners used national history as a source of inspirations. They selected specific historical events, political leaders, prominent people, and periods form collective memory (the figures of memory according to Jan Assmann) and interpreted their symbolic contents in new political context. Which part of collective memory was the main source of inspiration and why? How did authors of banners re/interpret symbolic meaning of chosen figures of memory? How did emotions as anger, frustration, hope etc. influence these re/interpretations?
