AnotaceThis study is focused on the technical study of three types of silver jewels, S-shaped temple rings, grape-shaped earrings, globular earrings recovered during the excavations of the early medieval necropolis of Lumbe Garden at Prague Castle. The goal of the presented research was to characterize the material and the different techniques used in the manufacture of each type of jewel, to define the nature and the extent of deterioration, and choose an adapted method to restore the artefacts. The jewels were characterized by observation under an optical stereomicroscope (Olympus SZ60) and by scanning electron miscroscopy (SEM) supplemented with electron microanalysis (EDS). The extent of the deterioration and nature of corrosion products were determined by observation under an optical stereomicroscope (Olympus SZ60), by scanning electron miscroscopy (SEM) and by polarization plots recorded directly on the surface of each type of jewel. Replicas of the main types were manufactured by a goldsmith.
