Carbon is the second most widely used cathode electrocatalyst (after platinum)
for counter electrodes of I-mediated DSSCs, and graphene presents a great deal
of these works. However, electrocatalytic activity comparable to platinumis hard
to achieve, if we require optical transparency of the cathode. Skipping this condition,
highly active (nontransparent) cathodes can be fabricated from a variety of
graphenes. The key to optimization of graphene cathodes of I-mediated DSSCs
is the effect of impurities and surface nanostructuring. High-quality pristine
graphene is a poor catalyst for triiodide reduction. The electrochemical charge
transfer and electrocatalytic activity of carbon surface for triiodide reduction is
far frombeing clearly understood. Lattice defects, rather than oxygen-containing
surface group, seem to be the active catalytic sites. Various other heteroatoms
on graphene skeleton (N, B, P, S, Se, etc.) can also play a role in the enhancement
of cathode activity.
