Industrial brownfields originated along with the first industrial estates in the 19th century but brownfields as an independent object of study came into focus among political representatives and scientists only in the second half of the 1990s. This article describes the most remarkable milestones of the industrial expansion on the territory of the Czech Republic focusing on: several peaks of capitalist booms during the era of the Habsburg monarchy and of independent Czechoslovakia before the World War II, the following period of socialist industrializationm, the economic transformation period after 1989. These historical milestones exerted decisive influence on shaping the spatial mosaic and the current concentrations of old and vacant locations of past industrial production. Using large data sets and graphic outputs, the article discusses the issues of industry and brownfields from the viewpoints of time, space (territory-specific), and industrial branches. The final section notes brownfields' reflections in the cultural landscape and the options of their regeneration.
