At higher light intensities (650-950 μmol m-2 s-1), EPS production was dependent on the nitrogen concentration in the cultivation medium. The optimal conditions of light and nitrogen for EPS production were 950 μmol m-2 s-1 and 6 mM nitrate, respectively, under which EPS approached 2 mg mL-1. These conditions were accompanied by significant ultrastructural changes.
