The study is intended as a short introduction to the life and works of Jan Mukařovský. In the first part of the study the author summarizes the fundamental principles of Mukařovský´s structuralism, and focuses also on his works in the fields of literary criticism, aesthetics, and semiotics. In the second part of the study the autor pursued Mukařovský´s understanding of the work of art as a sign.
